Festive Friday: Hello My Friend

Ever send a card just to say hello?

No? Why not?! Don’t you just love going to the mailbox and finding a surprise other than a credit card bill? I’m sure there’s someone in your life that would love to get a happy mail surprise too! Now that we’re post-holidays, most people don’t think of sending a card unless it’s for a birthday, Mother’s/Father’s day or maybe an anniversary. Let’s take some time to break that trend and fill up people’s mailboxes with sunshine!

Festive Friday has a fun inspiration topic this week – Belly Laugh Day! It’s time to pull out any pun-filled or joke sentiment stamp sets, to create a fun card (that you should mail to someone this week!). Of course, if you don’t have any pun or joke stamp sets, you can go for the “or” option with some stitching elements – either real stitching or faux. Don’t forget that we’ve changed up our challenge and all of our DT members provide a tutorial for their project – Instant CASE-worthy projects that you can Pin for reference!

Looking for ideas – here’s a few:

  • CASE one of the DT projects and add your own twist to our designs. Of course, if you blog about it, we would love for you to mention the Designer as your inspiration for your project.
  • Try your hand at adding stitched elements to your design. Of course, there are stitched dies, but you could also use a paper piercing tool to make your own faux patterns, or even use a sewing machine or needle and thread to add real stitching.

Here’s my take:

For the Festive Friday Challenge #FF0025). Featuring: Altenew Mega Greetings & Mega Hello die, Photo Play Paper Memories. #nicolewatt #pmretreat #hello #justbecause #altenew

I am without any punny or joke style stamp sets at the moment, so I opted for the “or” option, adding in a nice stitched element, and some real stitching for added detail. Let’s get on with the Party Plan!

Don’t forget to leave a comment at the end of the post to qualify for my monthly giveaway!

Stamps and Paper and Inks … Oh, My!

(Affiliate shopping links are listed at the end of the post)

Stamps: Mega Greetings (Altenew),
Paper: 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ – Solar White 110lb (Neenah), 4 1/2″ x 5 3/4″ remembrance Collection, Memories pattern (Photo Play Paper), 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ – Pink Frosting CS (Bazzill Smoothies), 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ – Gold Glitter CS (Kaisercraft), scrap of white CS
Inks: Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink(Ranger)
Accessories: Autumn Afternoon Sequins (28 Lilac Lane), gold thread (Coates)
Other: Mega Hello die (Altenew), Big Shot (Sizzix), Stamp Positioner (Tonic) and/or acrylic blocks, Large Stitched Rectangle Stackables (Lawn Fawn), adhesive backed foam

Party Plan

(your step-by-step guide to CASE-ing this design)

  1. Score your card base at 4 1/4″. Set aside.
  2. Diecut the Memories patterned paper with the largest Stitched Rectangle die. It’s easy to add real stitching now! Just use the diecut stitching as a guide to work in some optional gold thread stitches. I just did the lower left corner, but you could go all the way around if you want!
  3. DIecut the Mega Hello from gold glitter paper. I used a full 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ piece so I can use the reverse for another card. Don’t forget to save the cutout pieces to add back in later..
  1. DIecut another sentiment from Pink Frosting cardstock.
  2. Adhere the glitter hello offset from the pink one to make a shadow.
  3. Adhere the finished diecut element to the patterned paper element. Adhere the panel to the card base.
  1. Stamp the sentiment on some scrap white CS using Cracked Sapphire Distress Ink.
  2. Snip the words “My” and “Friend” from the stamped sentiment.
  3. Adhere the snipped words to the card base. “Friend” was adhered to the base and “My” was popped up with some adhesive backed foam.
  4. Add a few sequins and mail off your card!

Now it’s your turn to link up!

Now that you’re all inspired, what will you create? The clock is ticking away for #FF0025 and we want to see your design. Link up your project over at Festive Friday and you might just be named a Festive Fave!

My New Year’s Resolution Is….

It’s here! That time of year that we reflect on what was and hope for what could be. Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? I’m not big on calling them “resolutions”, or tying them to New Year’s as I always feel like they never last. So, instead, I think throughout the year about things I want to improve, and I work them in, piece by piece as I have time, energy and willingness to do so.

For instance, I wanted to be more physically active, so I worked to increase my weekly workout frequency this year. I ended up working out 170 times this year (not including all the days I golfed), which is fantastic! But, I can do better 😀 So, that’s what I’m resolving to do in 2019!

One other goal is to send more cards! This aligns with my blogging and business changes. Instead of making tons of cards for nobody in particular, I’m making less cards, but always with someone in mind! Having a reason for the card makes it easier to design, and sometimes, quicker to make.

That’s what the new challenge at Festive Friday is all about! How many times do you save a text or an email? Probably not very often. But, when you get a letter or a card in the mail, I bet you hang on to it. So, let’s celebrate the good ‘ol fashioned art of letter writing! That basically means you can make ANY card for this challenge. When you share your design on your blog or Pinterest page, be sure to share who it’s for.

Looking for ideas – here’s a few:

  • Make up some New Year’s cards to catch those folks that missed out on your Holiday cards.
  • Work up your January birthday cards and get ready to send them out, on time! LOL!!
  • Send a card for no reason – just to say Hi! Don’t you love good surprises from your mailbox? I know I do!

Here’s my take:

For the Festive Friday Challenge #FF0024). Featuring: Lawn Fawn - Happy Happy Happy, Perfectly Plaid Chill patterned paper, Prima - Watercolor Confections - Tropicals, Heffy Doodle - Imperial Stitched Rectangles #nicolewatt #pmretreat #happymail #justbecause #lawnfawn

Don’t forget – we changed the challenge a bit. Instead of collecting points for prizes (which didn’t really catch on so well), the DT members will provide a tutorial post in the form of instructions and pictures, or a video. Yea! Instant CASE-worthy projects that you can Pin for reference! So, be sure to stop by at the other DT blogs to see their projects and instructions. Let’s get on to the Party Plan!

Stamps and Paper and Inks … Oh, My!

(Affiliate shopping links are listed at the end of the post)

Stamps: Happy, Happy, Happy (Lawn Fawn),
Paper: 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ – Solar White 110lb (Neenah), 3 3/4″ x 5″ Perfectly Plaid Chill (Lawn Fawn), 3 3/4″ x 2 1/2″ – Blue Jay CS (Lawn Fawn), 3 3/4″ x 2 1/2″ – Watercolor Paper (Canson 140lb)
Inks: Watercolor Confections – Tropicals (Prima), Jet Black (Staz-on), Copics (C01, C03, Y13), Sharpie Pen (Thin Line),
Accessories: 3/8″ Crumb Cake ribbon (Stampin’ Up!)
Other: Big Shot, Stamp Positioner and/or acrylic blocks, Heffy Doodle Imperial Stitched Rectangle dies

Party Plan

(your step-by-step guide to CASE-ing this design)

  1. Score your card base at 4 1/4″.
  2. Diecut the plaid paper with the 2nd largest stitched rectangle die.Adhere to card base. Set aside.
  3. Diecut the watercolor paper with the 4th largest rectangle die.
  4. Draw an envelope on a scrap piece of white cardstock. I just used a ruler to make the top and bottom, then freehanded the rest of the lines. It doesn’t need to be perfect – and probably looks better that it isn’t!
  5. Color in the lower part of the envelope to provide some shading, I used C1 and C3 Copic Sketch markers. Then, fussy-cut the envelope.
  1. Apply a blue watercolor wash to the stitched rectangle watercolor piece. Air dry or heat dry.
  2. Add plain water spatter to the wash and pick up with a paper towel. This will leave waterspots and extra dimension.
  3. For the last layer, spatter on some Frost White All Purpose Ink. Air dry or heat dry. If you heat dry, be careful to not let the All Purpose Ink bubble up.
  1. Stamp the sentiment in Staz-on. Using a stamp positioner is a good idea so it can be stamped a few times to fill in the watercolor paper texture.
  2. Adhere the finished watercolor panel to the Blue Jay cardstock layer.
  3. Add the fussy-cut envelope to the sentiment element.
  4. Add a small flag of crumb cake ribbon – use mini glue dots to adhere.
  5. Adhere the finished panel to the card base using pop-up foam.

PS: At the last minute, I decided to stamp the little smiley face from the stamp set on the back of the envelope and color it in with a yellow (Y13) Copic. I love the way it pulls in the yellow from the patterned paper!

True or False: December is the fastest month

I don’t know about you, but I say TRUE! How can it already be 10 days to Christmas Eve? Then the following week we’re welcoming 2019! Yikes! I’m glad that the holiday cards went out in the mail a few weeks ago (thanks to some help from the husband), but I have a short list of people that I meant to send a card to, but they got left off the list. What to do?! I don’t have time to make cards to get them in the mail before Christmas, BUT, I do have time between Christmas and New Year’s to make up some New Year’s cards and get them in the mail just after the 1st.

How lucky that Festive Friday would be celebrating New Year’s this week! If you’re in the same predicament as me, hopefully our inspiration will help you out. We’re changing the challenge a bit. Instead of collecting points for prizes (which didn’t really catch on so well), the DT members will provide a tutorial post in the form of instructions and pictures, or a video. Yea! Instant CASE-worthy projects that you can Pin for reference!

Looking for ideas – here’s a few:

  • CASE one of the DT projects and add your own twist to our designs. Of course, if you blog about it, we would love for you to mention the Designer as your inspiration for your project.
  • Looking for something different? Make up a metallic stars or diamonds garland to decorate for your house party – that would surely count for this challenge.
  • Of course, anything glittery or shimmery will do – from rhinestones to sequins, glimmer paper, foil paper, metallic embossing, gilding, the list really does go on and on and on. Skip the “new year’s” part of the challenge and just give us that glitz!

Here’s my take:

For the Festive Friday Challenge #FF0023). Featuring: Lawn Fawn - Happy Happy Happy, Nuvo Gilding Flakes - Sunkissed Copper. #nicolewatt #pmretreat #newyears #copper #gilding #cleanandsimple

There are a few fun and exciting new (to me) things in this project, I can’t wait for you to see the Party Plan!

Don’t forget to leave a comment at the end of the post to qualify for my monthly giveaway!

Stamps and Paper and Inks … Oh, My!

(Affiliate shopping links are listed at the end of the post)

Stamps: Happy, Happy, Happy (Lawn Fawn),
Paper: 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ – Solar White 110lb (Neenah), 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ Peach CS (Stampin’ Up!), 4″ x 5 1/4″ – Mermaid CS (Lawn Fawn), 4″ x 5 1/4″ – Black Licorice CS (Lawn Fawn)
Inks: Versamark (Tsukineko)
Accessories: Not So Heavy Metal Sequin Tin (28 Lilac Lane)
Other: Heat Tool, Big Shot, Stamp Positioner and/or acrylic blocks, Anti-static powder, Super Fine Copper Embossing Powder (Ranger), Large Stitched Rectangle Stackables (Lawn Fawn), Sunkissed Copper Gilding Flakes (Nuvo), 2-Way Glue Pen (Zig)

Party Plan

(your step-by-step guide to CASE-ing this design)

  1. Score your card base at 4 1/4″. Adhere the peach cardstock to the card base. Fold and burnish the edge with a bone folder. Set aside
  2. Diecut the black cardstock with the 2nd largest stitched rectangle die
  3. Stamp the “happy” sentiment in Versamark – use a stamp positioning tool or acrylic block. Be sure to use an anti-static bag or powder first so the embossing powder doesn’t stick all over! Heat emboss in copper.
  4. Then, stamp the individual letters for “New Year”, again, in Versamark. I opted for a wonky look, but you can line them up if you want. Heat emboss in copper.
  1. Then, on the aqua cardstock, apply 2-way glue around the edges. Allow the glue to dry to its tacky state.
  2. Apply Nuvo Gilding Flakes (I used copper), covering the glued edges. Rub the flakes on each other until the excess comes off. You’ll be left with a wonderful antique gilded edge. It’s supposed to look imperfect, and it’s oh, so, lovely!
  1. Adhere the black sentiment panel to the aqua panel,  then adhere the finished panel to the card base, making sure to keep even spacing on each layer.
  2. Add various size copper sequins around the sentiment.

Now it’s your turn to link up!

This card is a classic red and green workup, wouldn’t you say? I love how this paper makes it super easy to whip out dozens of these cards in no time! This is my go-to card for the season. I do have a few other designs, but this one is getting the mass-production treatment for sure.

Even my husband will help! He loves to run the Big Shot, so, guess who’s cutting out all of those ovals?! Even the assembly is simple enough that I will be able to get him to help with that too.

Festive Friday: Brusho Country Home

Are you ready for a real challenge?

We’ve got a good one for you over at Festive Friday where we’re celebrating 3D Day (it’s on December 3rd). That means we’re looking for 3D projects OR you can use the other option of a Single Layer project. Combine the two for an extra challenge!

I don’t know what we were thinking with this one. I know it was a big challenge for me as I don’t typically do either type of project. I just love embellishing too much to make a single layer card, and I don’t really have the occasion to do a 3D project. Yikes!

If you stopped by yesterday, this card won’t be too much of a surprise. I’ve been exploring Brusho Crystal Colour coupled with Masking Fluid to make these wonderful one-layer cards! For once, I’m content with this simple, flat design, because it’s anything but flat! The Brusho brings the background to life, and watercoloring instantly adds depth to any image if done properly. In the end, this single-layer design leaps off the page!

Today’s project can be completed in no time.
