Introducing Sketch Starters with Nicole

Mar 19, 2020Hello, Just Because & For You Cards6 comments

Let’s get started with a sketch!

I’m excited to share the new series that I’m creating for Altenew! It’s called Sketch Starters with Nicole. In each video, I’ll share a new card sketch and then show you two ways to interpret it. As you might know, sketches are an integral part of my design process. You bring the color and the style, I’ll bring the layout! ⁣

As you can see, I like to keep my sketches pretty basic so that I have lots of room for interpretation and don’t get boxed in with a specific design element or shape.

Literal Interpretation

For my first take, I went very literal. You can see the five sections in the background, and the rectangle shape in the foreground. I did a bunch of simple paper piecing using Gradient cardstock and the Polish Papercuts die set. The sentiment comes from the coordinating Wonderful Wycinanki stamp set.

Stretching the Sketch Interpretation

For my second design, I stretched the sketch a bit. Instead of hard and fast lines, I used the 5-section idea to create a continuous watercolor with the Bold Floral Drape set and the Spring Watercolor Brush Markers. The rectangular shape got stretched to a larger footprint through some creative cutting and the addition of the sentiment to break up the top and bottom.
