5 Ways to Add a Lace Look

Welcome to the first ever Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop! This month’s theme is Sale-a-Bration, so I thought I’d showcase 5 ways to add a lace look using the Delicate Details stamp set. It’s a lovely “accessory” stamp set that’s available FREE with $50 purchase during Sale-a-Bration!

Since this is an “accessory” stamp set (doesn’t have any sentiments) I paired it with another Sale-a-Bration set – Any Occasion. You’ll see that my samples really are great for any occasion — Lace isn’t reserved for the frilly and feminine!

You may just be starting the blog hop here at my blog or may be hopping over from elsewhere on the list. If you get off track at any time, the full lineup below will help you move along from blog to blog so you see all the projects.

Stretching My Creativity

Ok – here we go! 5 ways to add a lacy look. I came up with the title before I created the projects, so I was committed (or doomed to an eternity in the Retreat to come up with 5 samples). After I got past the first one, the rest came easy. I think the key tipping point was deciding to add in the Any Occasion stamp set for the sentiments. It helped set the tone and card size (I opted for our 3.5 x. 5 notecards).

There’s lots of watercoloring too… it really is quite fun to come up with washes and other ways to use our reinkers and aquapainters! Ok, so, enough blahblahblahblah…. Click on the plus signs to view each project.

This is the design that kicked-off this whole collection. I wanted watercolor – bright & vivid. I wanted lace – hinted-at… UGH! It took me a couple of tries, but I finally arrived at gorgeous! Yes – that is Tempting Turquoise. Straight from the re-inker with just a hint of water added. Layer, dry. Layer, dry. Layer, dry. Then, the lace was stamped with Whisper White craft ink, and immediately covered in white embossing powder. I took a dry paintbrush to the powder to remove some of it from the lace, then heat-set it. I did stamp the “twine” stamp to align the sentiment, but then I glued some Linen Thread right over the top, with one of the Party Animal embellishments. I did add some Clear Wink of Stella to the lace in the end…

2. Lace In-The-Round

This one came together quick! Another watercolor wash using Tempting Turquoise reinker – this time, on Shimmery White Cardstock. Then, some ink spatter, and Gold Wink of Stella spatter. Dry it up quick with the Heat Tool. Then, I punched out a 2″ circle from some scrap and attached it to an acrylic block. I was able to work one of the lace patterns around the circle, and add the sentiment around the bottom (check out my Instagram feed). Genius! Stamp in Basic Black Archival Ink, add the Dragonfly and pop-up on some Stampin’ Dimensionals.

3. Lace in the Background

I know you’ve seen it everywhere, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t use all of the Delicate Details stamps in a big block to create a background. Here, Whisper White Craft Ink on a Crumb Cake Notecard is a nice, light detail to set the background apart from the top layer. There’s some more Turquoise watercolor wash with gold and turquoise spatter. This time, a tiny bit of Calypso Coral – in both the hearts and the background strip. Oh, and how about some glitz with a small sequins flag? Wondering how I got that scallop? I used just the top of the Best Badge Punch! Nice hack, right?

4. Lace Gone Masculine…?

I knew I wanted to get in a good guy look, so here we are. Crumb Cake notecard with watercoloring across the bottom. I opted for the more curly-cue stamps from Delicate Details. Does it count as lace? There’s some more Turquoise and gold splatter, and the Happy Birthday banner. To set off the top layer, I added a strip of Tangerine Tango to the top, and a screw head element from the Urban Underground embellishments.

5. Lace As An Architectural Feature

This last look is pretty far out. I got some watercolor paper really wet on top and dripped the ink and let it roll. That’s what I got. Pretty neat!. Then, I added the two lace patterns – one on the base card, and one on the watercolor element. I thought I would use ribbon, but opted for the Gold Sequins Trim instead. I think the whole top has an architectural look to it. Kind of  like crown molding or the top of a column, or wood “gingerbread” detail (technically called a Spandrel). I used the Signo White Gel Pen to add some white detail, just for some pop.

Stamp-free for PPA 273

It was Tuesday morning and I looked up from my computer in a panic. Uh-oh! My Pals Paper Arts design was due to the team in just a few minutes! What would I do? Would I get a design done in time? Let’s take a look at the sketch first…

Pals Paper Arts 273 - play with us today! (www.palspaperarts.com)

Ok – so, not too difficult, but maybe I could cut corners and not stamp anything? How about this? I got it to the team just in time…

Project Life to the Rescue!

Need a card quick, and no time to stamp? Project Life pocket cards are the answer! I took this 3×4 card from the Love Story card collection and cut it down to 2 3/4″ x 2 3/4″. No stamping required! Project Life card kits come with all sorts of great sentiments and fantastic background-style cards. Even if you don’t do any sort of memory-keeping, having some of these kits around can be a time saver!

Take a Hint!

I’m always telling you that sketches are just a starting-off point. Here’s a great example of that – you can either take those semi-circles literally, or you can take them as a suggestion. In this case, it suggests to me that there should be some swirls of gold cording!

Washi This:

I’m always looking for good uses for washi tape. In this case, I was looking for some extra glitz, and the Winter Wonderland gold striped washi was just the answer. I wanted something that would keep the focus on the sentiment and the gold cording, but still bring all the elements together. Washi was the perfect choice!

Classy (& easy) Love for PPA 241

This week is coming to an end, and I’m certainly glad it is! I finally feel like I’m making some headway with my to-do list and I’m looking forward to checking off lots and lots over the weekend! I hope that playing along with Pals Paper Arts is on your to-do list! We’ve got a great, and classic sketch for you this week:

Remember, with our new sketch style, the gray layer is the base…. Here’s my design!

Maven’s Mastery Tips

Stop the Hoarding (part deux): Yesterday, I advocated for using up supplies you already have – let someone else get enjoyment from your beautiful stuff! So, today, I pulled out a pocket card from the Love Story Project Life kit, and the leftover sequins from the accessory pack. I also save all the clear sides of the photopolymer stamp packaging because its the same weight as our window sheets. So, that’s another scrap out of my box!

Fall in LOVE (again): I also featured the Sweetie Pie Frames photopolymer stamp set yesterday – here it is again! This time, embossed in silver on some chalkboard paper. It’s soooo classy in person!

Layer Unexpectedly: Instead of having the silver layer right on the base, it’s actually just underneath the top black layer. It gives a whole different look to the design when it’s raised just as tall as the shaker frame. First, I cut the oval out of the chalkboard layer, then, I used it as a template to trace the same oval on the silver layer. Once both were cut, the ribbon was adhered, then the two layers were glued together. This was followed by the window sheet. Shaker Frame foam was placed around the Project Life square, then the sequins was poured in. Finally the sandwich was all completed then adhered to the card base with dimensionals around the outside and some extra multi-purpose glue behind the shaker section.

Who knew such a gorgeous card could come together so quickly!

What will you do with this week’s PPA sketch? I can’t wait to see!

PPA234 for My Try-it Challenge

Happy New Year! Whether you’re nursing a hangover, or rearing to go, the new year always brings reflection and excitement for the year to come. Now, I’m not one for resolutions, but I recently read an article about making a Try-it List. The idea is simple – to grow, and learn, and try something new, at least once. It reminds me of my days in the Girl Scouts when we had to take a “Brownie Bite” of any food that we’d never had before – just to see if we like it. You never know, it might just become your favorite thing!

So, for today’s Try-it Challenge, I’m challenging you to try out an online design challenge! As you know, I am a designer for Pals Paper Arts, so that’s not really a stretch for me, but I will be playing along with other online challenges more frequently this year.

Challenges are a great way to stretch your skills and creativity. For example, this week’s PPA challenge is three colors that you need to incorporate into your design. Of course, you can add in any neutrals (white, cream, craft) to balance out your project.

Pals Paper Arts 234 - play with us today! (www.palspaperarts.com)

Here’s my design. It features a new bundle from the 2015 Occasions Catalog – the Crazy About You photopolymer stamp set (also comes in clear and wood) and the Hello You Thinlits dies. I’ve got the photopolymer bundle listed below, but you can’t get it until Tuesday (January 6, 2015).

Maven’s Mastery Tips

It’s just a guideline: Remember, when playing along with design challenges, they’re just a guideline. You can take the challenge as literally as you want, or just use it as a jumping-off point. Don’t have Wisteria Wonder? Try another shade of purple. No silver? Of course, you can use any shade of grey!

Color + Sketch = Match made in heaven! Are you playing along with a color challenge somewhere, but lost for design inspiration? Pair it up with a sketch challenge and then enter your final design into both!

I’m not a blogger, but I wanna play! Sites like Pinterest and Split Coast Stampers allow you to post your designs. All you have to do is upload directly to those sites (on Pinterest, create a board called “my challenge designs” to keep ’em all in one place) and then use the URL from the page to enter your card into the challenge. If you need instructions, let me know!

Commit to Try-it today! Pop on by my Facebook page (don’t forget to click the LIKE button!) and share which challenge you will play along with this week. I’ve got a starter list there if you’re not sure which challenge is best for you…

An Engaging Card for a Fabulous Engagement

Back in January I was out in Houston for Stampin’ Up! Leadership. One of the perks of that trip was reconnecting with an old Air Force friend of mine – Rob. We worked together for three years in Germany, and both went through the military separation process together. It had been SEVEN year since we’d seen each other – holy moly, how time flies!

Well, anyway, I got to spend a lovely day with Rob and his boyfriend, Chris, and I knew that they couldn’t be more right for each other. Then, a few weeks back, Chris and Rob both announced on their Facebook pages that they’d gotten engaged while on their trip to Italy. So, of course, they’ve got an engagement card coming their way!

By Nicole Watt for Pals Paper Arts (PPA208); Big News stamp set, Mosaic embossing folder, Calypso Coral embossing powder; @PMRetreat #pixelmaven #stampinup

I headed for some more masculine colors, combining Lost Lagoon and Island Indigo with golds and silvers. My design was inspired by this week’s Pals Paper Arts sketch (turned on its side):

Lastly, I added a hint of whimsy with two embossed hearts. They’re fussy cut, and one popped up just a little on one side to add some more dimension.

I know they’re going to treasure this card along with all the other well-wishes they’ve received. Hmm…. now I’ve got to start thinking about an even more amazing wedding card!
