How to Heat Emboss

Heat embossing is a staple technique in papercrafting. Let’s get this one added to your toolkit!

I love teaching heat embossing and seeing the look on someone’s face the first time that powder melts and creates an amazing glossy result. It is just soooo cool! I mean, who would think that stamping, applying a powder and then heating it up would lead to anything so wow?!

When I was growing up, we didn’t have a Heat Gun, so we used a lightbulb, or even a pan on an electric stove! Yikes! Today, we have more appropriate tools. Beware, though – the Heat Gun DOES get very, very hot! Don’t ever point it at anyone, keep your fingers clear, and don’t heat your image on a surface that can be damaged by heat – like wood, paper or even formica. You want a heat-resistant surface, or hold the image up in the air.

Of course, there are some other steps to take to ensure that you have good results. Here’s how you do it!

How to Heat Emboss

  1. Use an Embossing Buddy (anti-static bag) to remove static from the surface.
  2. Ink up the image using Versamark embossing ink, and stamp the image on the prepared surface.
  3. Coat the inked image in the desired embossing powder.
  4. Tap to remove excess embossing powder. Use a small paintbrush if necessary, to remove any stray powder.
  5. Heat image with a Heat Gun.
  6. Once the image starts to melt, move the Heat Gun around until the entire image is complete.
  7. Let cool for a few seconds.
  8. Finish your design!

How to Prepare Stamps for Best Use

Did you know that both rubber and photopolymer stamps should be prepared for first use?

We call the process of preparing stamps for first use “priming”. It is a very easy, but important process! Priming stamps removes all of the oil and residue from stamp manufacturing. If not properly primed, ink will bead up on the stamp and the image won’t stamp as fully and cleanly. Here’s how you do it!

Rubber stamps

  1. Adhere stamp to wood block, or prepare stamp for use on a clear acrylic block.
  2. Spray Stampin’ Mist on a Stampin’ Scrub.
  3. Clean and dry the stamp on the Stampin’ Scrub.
  4. If you don’t have Stampin’ Mist or a Stampin’ Scrub, you can use a drop of dish soap in warm water. Wash & dry.
  5. Stamp away!

For photopolymer and acrylic stamps, here’s an additional step you can take to keep ink from staining the stamp too much.

  1. After cleaning the stamp as above, use ink up the stamp with VersaMark. This will penetrate into the semi-porous stamp first.
  2. You can optionally clean the stamp again, or go right into your preferred ink color.
  3. After inking, clean stamp immediately. You will most likely notice some staining, but not nearly as much as without using VersaMark.

This is a part of my Paper Party video series – an introduction to stamping basics. Enjoy, the video! Supplies used are listed afterwards.

It’s another Thursday and we’re back with another Tic Tac Toe Challenge. (Boy, do these new challenges just make the weeks fly by!). I had some of my Maker Mavens community, and other Pretty Pals over for an event on Saturday, and I taught the technique I shared last week – using gesso for watercoloring on any paper. It was a hit, and I ended up with a few extra samples for my leftovers box. There was one in particular that I knew I wanted to use for this week’s challenge. Let’s take a look at the board:

Play along at the Tic Tac Toe Challenge - Inspiring you 8-ways each week! Find us @tttchallenge or tictactoechallenge.com. New challenges every Thursday!

Like a few of the other designers, I headed to the left column – Love, Gold & Die-cut. But, I added in a few other elements that I thought would work together nicely – Pink, Sentiment and Bling.

For the Tic Tac Toe Challenge (#TTTC012). Featuring,Sunshine Sayings stamp set, Sunshine Wishes Thinlits. Gold Foil, Metallics Sequin Assortment. For more details and a video on watercoloring on any paper, and using Sizzix Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets click through. #pmretreat #stampinup #watercolor #love #pink #handstamped

The Paper Party is back! Today we’ll be looking at the Sizzix Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets. I’ve had these for a while, but keep forgetting to try them. Well, not any more! Previously, I would use the Tombow Multipurpose Adhesive (aka: green glue) to put tiny dots of adhesive and stick the element onto the design. Now, I can cut and add adhesive at the same time! WITH NO MESS! Let’s take a look!

Gotta have it – am I right? Here’s some more tips on today’s design:

  • DO NOT – I repeat, DO NOT try to put just an intricate diecut (already cut out) on the sheet and rub the back and hope for the adhesive to stick. I had a MESS when I tried this. The adhesive didn’t cut off around the diecut, so the center pulled out and then got on the front too! On the cardstock pieces I was able to use my adhesive remover to get it off, but the foil pieces were ruined. This might work ok with larger shapes – but try it at your own risk! 😉
  • Sunshine Sayings and the Sunshine Wishes Thinlits were meant for each other! (Literally!) Even though they’re not bundled anymore, if you get one, you’ll want the other to make lots of versatile sentiments. I find that I’m using the cutout words technique a lot with this one. The words are large enough to cut each out separately and place in a haphazard way on the card. It’s so cute and carefree!
  • Love the watercoloring? I did a video on it last week – so, be sure to check that out! You’ll be seeing a lot more of this design element from me because I am in love with the saturated colors! Word of warning – you’ll want all of the ink refills once you start watercoloring this way… Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

Paper Snips and Fussy Cutting

Welcome to the June 2017 Pals Blog Hop. Thank you so much for joining us today. This month’s theme, Pick a “B”, features projects inspired by Babies, Birthdays and Brides to name few. I went for Bride and decided to have a Paper Party while I was at it. So, bring your snips and let’s learn about fussy-cutting!

Whether you’re just starting the hop, or have come from a previous Pal’s blog, you’ll find the line-up toward the end of my post to help you move along.

Here Comes the Bride!

But first, a moment of silence….

Are you just drooling over this card? (I know my cousin did!). I know I’ve created a bit of a faux pas by using two retired products (gasp!) – my beloved Crumb Cake Medium Envelopes (I’m still mourning….) and the So In Love DSP. Well – it needs to be used up, and you should use yours too! So, don’t abandon it to the far corners of your craft space – show it some love and create something lovely!

And on to the deets…

Revealing the mysteries….

Just say the word “fussy-cut” and you’ll know what kind of crafter you’re dealing with. They either love the technique, are not a fan, or have never tried it and completely mystified. I guess you could say that about any technique, really, but fussy-cutting is one that comes up a lot. Now that we have dies and punches that coordinate with many sets, and even e-cutters that will cut around shapes, fussy-cutting is a less frequent practice, but still an important one for those times you really want a cut-out, but only have snips.

In this case, the flower in the Flourishing Phrases stamp set does NOT have a coordinating die or punch! What?! I thought maybe the retired Flower Medallion punch would work, but nope…. So, time to fussy-cut. It’s easiest to share with a video, so here it is! Enjoy this new series – the Paper Party – where I show you how to have fun with paper and ink!

Are you snipping away yet? Good! Here’s some more details about today’s card if you want to recreate it:

  • Basic Black Archival Ink – it’s the perfect ink for stamping on Vellum. You can also use Memento Tuxedo Black, or any other Stampin’ Up! color. You will want to hit those with your heat tool on a low setting to help dry and set the ink. When stamping, be sure not to rock the stamp – go firmly down and up as inked stamps have a tendency to slide on vellum.
  • Freeform Embossing is easy to do. Just swipe your Versamark Ink Pad across the area where you want the swipe of embossing powder, and add your powder. If you get strays, or want to refine where the powder ends up, use a paint brush to brush off the excess. Heat. Done. Easy!
  • Two Toned Flower – the fussy-cut flower was stamped in Blushing Bride. Then I came back and put some Calypso Coral on an acrylic stamp block (use your Stampin’ Write Marker, or just smoosh the block into your ink pad) and then used a Blender Pen to grab little bits of ink, and added to the inside of each petal – slowly, and just little bits at a time, to make the color darker. Gives it a bit of a 3-D look, don’t’cha think?

That’s about it – so time for you to share!
