VIDEO: How to Wow – Warp-free Watercolor (TTTC003)

So much changes in a week…. but you can count on a new Tic Tac Toe Challenge on Thursdays! If you haven’t been by, be sure to check out the Picks here. This week’s How to Wow video focuses on achieving a flawless watercolor wash without warping your paper!

This week’s Featured designer is Shannon Jaramillo (shannonkaypaperie.com) . I’ve been a long-time admirer of her work – and I know you will be too, so, I’m super excited to see what she has in store for us, along with the rest of Team X. As for me, I thought I’d go with some fun textures to make a mostly monochrome design really pop.

There’s watercoloring, embossing paste, sewing, linen thread, a “wink” of Stella…. texture is what really makes a monochromatic design stand out. Anyone that sees the card just wants to touch all the different parts to explore the texture and how it all comes together.

Today’s “wow” technique is a supporting player, but, trust me, without it, the card would look pretty blah. There are some key steps to the perfect watercolor wash background. If you’ve struggled with this technique, today’s How to Wow video will show you how to perfect it! If you’ve never tried it before, my tips should give you the confidence to be successful the first time!

One thing I forgot to note in the video is that you don’t need a hardboard or piece of MDF to do this technique. A piece of thick cardboard will work in a pinch. The glimmer paper and foil sheets both have a nice thick piece from the packaging that will work just perfect.

VIDEO: How to Wow – Distressed Metal (TTTC002)

It’s been a week already! Welcome back for another Tic Tac Toe Challenge! We were just floored by all the submissions from our inaugural challenge – be sure to check out the Picks here. As promised, I have another How to Wow video – this time featuring the distressed metal used in my design.

This week’s Featured designer is Corinne Blake (thecreativecompendium.com) and, no matter what three elements you choose, you can’t go wrong! When the Design Teams were setting up their boards and doing up our first projects, we all wondered if we could do all nine elements. Would it look too cluttered? Would something just not go together? Well, surprise, surprise! It CAN be done! And I did it!

It was a total accident. I started off with Masculine, Birthday, Hexagon. But then, realized that the hexagon was embossing and I used the diecut from Swirly Scribbles – that was also yellow. The background is wood, there’s a gray banner, and of course, some Enamel Glitter Dots embellishments (the best way to sneak in some glitter for a masculine card!). And, POOF! I was at all 9 elements!

Let’s take a minute to focus on the “wow” element – that hexagon piece that looks like distressed sheet metal. As are many “wow” techniques, this one is pretty simple. Simple enough I can show it to you in less than 3 minutes! Take a look:

You’re probably thinking that it can’t get much easier – there must be a catch? Nope! No catch. Just some sandpaper on your foil sheets. It even works great without the embossing folder! The key is to take your time. Let the ink dry, and sand gently and sparingly. You can always take more off, but it’s really hard to put back on!

Here’s a few other tips about this card

  • The Basic Gray bars are stamped off. I didn’t want solid – but more distressed. So, don’t fret if the whole image doesn’t stamp.
  • I wanted a bold swirly element – instead of the typical thread or twine, so I went for the Swirly Scribble. BUT, I didn’t want all the leaves. So, I simply snipped off the ones that I didn’t want!
  • Always heat-set your craft ink! Stamp, then heat set, THEN punch!
  • The Happy and Birthday are just freehanded. They’re not supposed to be perfect rectangles. That adds to the rustic look!

VIDEO: Come Join the Paper Party – Bring your Snips!

Welcome to the June 2017 Pals Blog Hop. Thank you so much for joining us today. This month’s theme, Pick a “B”, features projects inspired by Babies, Birthdays and Brides to name few. I went for Bride and decided to have a Paper Party while I was at it. So, bring your snips and let’s learn about fussy-cutting!

Whether you’re just starting the hop, or have come from a previous Pal’s blog, you’ll find the line-up toward the end of my post to help you move along.

Here Comes the Bride!

But first, a moment of silence….

Are you just drooling over this card? (I know my cousin did!). I know I’ve created a bit of a faux pas by using two retired products (gasp!) – my beloved Crumb Cake Medium Envelopes (I’m still mourning….) and the So In Love DSP. Well – it needs to be used up, and you should use yours too! So, don’t abandon it to the far corners of your craft space – show it some love and create something lovely!

And on to the deets…

Revealing the mysteries….

Just say the word “fussy-cut” and you’ll know what kind of crafter you’re dealing with. They either love the technique, are not a fan, or have never tried it and completely mystified. I guess you could say that about any technique, really, but fussy-cutting is one that comes up a lot. Now that we have dies and punches that coordinate with many sets, and even e-cutters that will cut around shapes, fussy-cutting is a less frequent practice, but still an important one for those times you really want a cut-out, but only have snips.

In this case, the flower in the Flourishing Phrases stamp set does NOT have a coordinating die or punch! What?! I thought maybe the retired Flower Medallion punch would work, but nope…. So, time to fussy-cut. It’s easiest to share with a video, so here it is! Enjoy this new series – the Paper Party – where I show you how to have fun with paper and ink!

Are you snipping away yet? Good! Here’s some more details about today’s card if you want to recreate it:

  • Basic Black Archival Ink – it’s the perfect ink for stamping on Vellum. You can also use Memento Tuxedo Black, or any other Stampin’ Up! color. You will want to hit those with your heat tool on a low setting to help dry and set the ink. When stamping, be sure not to rock the stamp – go firmly down and up as inked stamps have a tendency to slide on vellum.
  • Freeform Embossing is easy to do. Just swipe your Versamark Ink Pad across the area where you want the swipe of embossing powder, and add your powder. If you get strays, or want to refine where the powder ends up, use a paint brush to brush off the excess. Heat. Done. Easy!
  • Two Toned Flower – the fussy-cut flower was stamped in Blushing Bride. Then I came back and put some Calypso Coral on an acrylic stamp block (use your Stampin’ Write Marker, or just smoosh the block into your ink pad) and then used a Blender Pen to grab little bits of ink, and added to the inside of each petal – slowly, and just little bits at a time, to make the color darker. Gives it a bit of a 3-D look, don’t’cha think?

That’s about it – so time for you to share!

VIDEO: How to Wow – Ink Swiping on Foil (TTTC001)

I am so proud and humbled to be a part of the new Tic Tac Toe Challenge Design Team! Today is our first challenge (TTTC001), and I thought I’d go big and incorporate a new video series with my cards – “How to Wow”. This series will take amazing techniques and knock them down to totally do-able. (It is papercrafting, not brain surgery! Right?!)

Our first challenge board was created by Peggy Noe (prettypapercards.com), so, she’s the week’s Featured Designer. I decided to go for the far right column – Gold – Black – Baker’s Twine. And with that, the first How to Wow video was decided – how to do ink swiping on foil paper. So fun, so easy, and so impressive!

I don’t want to have you spend all your time reading so, really, let’s just get to the video! In all honesty, the technique is very simple, but having some tips before you start can make all the difference. Add this technique to your crafting toolbox and it will be a go-to for years to come!

VIDEO: Adding Patina to Foil Sheets

2017 Pals Blog Hop badge

Welcome to the Techniques & Textures Pals Blog Hop for May 2017.  We are thankful you stopped by to take in all of our projects! Today, I’ll be adding patina to foil sheets and showing you how to do it.

This month we are featuring projects that are “stepped up” by using textures or fun techniques. We hope to provide you with lots of ideas and that you enjoy our creations.

You may just be starting the Blog Hop or may have come from the previous link from the Line-up on the Pals Blog Hop listing shown below.  The full lineup will help you move along from blog to blog so you may see all the projects.

Over the top? Naw…

I loooovvee our foil sheets. Really, how could they get any better than they already are? Metallic pieces add such an amazing, elegant touch to any project. But I think today, I’ve gone over the top! I figured that adding patina to foil sheets would take them from perfectly shiny to perfectly antiqued and aged and I just had to figure out how to do it and share it with you.

I consider this a bit of an “advanced” technique – only because it takes some time to apply the finish, so patience is important. Go slow and add just a little bit at a time. Here’s some key products:

  • Sponge Daubers – to daub on ink
  • Paper Towel – to wipe and blot
  • Heat Gun – to dry the ink between applications
  • Fine Grit Sandpaper – to rough the foil for additional texture
  • Stampin’ Mist – to apply a water-spotted look

Check out my video that walks you through the whole patina process…
