On the CASE: Vintage Leaves

I am so excited to share today’s On the CASE file with you! Vintage Leaves is one of my favorite sets, and the sample in this year’s catalog is just a stunner – and easier than you might think!

Ann is CASE-ing out another carry-over set – Sheltering Tree (page 150 of the Annual Catalog), and this time, I’ve picked out another botanical – Vintage Leaves. I love that this set has a nice variety of realistic leaf images. They look amazing stamped, or embossed. And, of course, with the coordinating framelits (Leaflets Framelits), there’s no excuse to skip this set. Though, the shapes are easy enough for fussy cutting if you prefer.

Since Vintage Leaves doesn’t have a sentiment set, it’s likely that you’ll combine it with a sentiment from another set, or from a die. The catalog sample uses a diecut from the Lovely Words Thinlits, and a stamped sentiment from Lovely Inside & Out. I don’t have that stamp set, so I opted for Sunshine Sayings. That’s the beauty of this design – you can pair up any sentiment for any occasion. It would work as a sympathy card equally as well as a birthday card!

The last element I’m really diggin’ in this CASE is the embossing paste – white on white – and the white diecut leaves. So elegant!!!

Stamps and Paper and Inks … Oh, My!

Stamps: Vintage Leaves, Sunshine Sayings
Paper: Thick Whisper White Cardstock (8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″), Whisper White Cardstock (4″ x 5″), 2″ strips of Chocolate Chip, Cajun Craze, Pumpkin Pie, So Saffron & Emerald Envy, Silver Foil Paper (2″ x 3″)
Inks: Early Espresso, Cajun Craze, Pumpkin Pie, So Saffron, Emerald Envy
Accessories: Metallics Sequin Assortment, Silver Metallic Thread
Other: Embossing Paste, Pattern Party Decorative Masks, Palette Knives, Big Shot, Leaflets Framelits, Lovely Words Thinlits

On the CASE Notes

(your step-by-step guide)

It’s easiest to break this into three distinct sections, then assemble at the end!

BACKGROUND

  1. Score your card base at 4 1/4″. Fold and burnish the edge with a bone folder.
  2. Put the diamond mask from the Pattern Party Decorative Masks on top of the folded card base and use the angled knife from the Palette Knives set to smear paste across the mask. Set the card base aside to dry.

***Nit-picky details: Note in step three that you see some of the paste on the mask. You really want to scrape the knife across the mask so there’s no paste on the mask. That’s how you’ll get a nice, thin layer on the cardstock underneath. Too thick and it will take forever to dry!

LEAVES

Move on to the leaves. You only need scraps of the colored cardstock as you’ll be cutting out strips and re-assembling.

  1. Stamp the corresponding ink color onto each piece of cardstock. Note where you will cut out the shape eventually. You don’t need whole leaves, so this is a great opportunity to use up scraps!
  2. Once the strips are stamped, cut them out with the Leaflet Framelit and trim down to smaller strips.
  3. Use a stamped image (I did mine on some grid paper) as a guide to glue the strips together into the full leaf image.
  4. The last leaf step is to cut out a maple and an oak leaf in Whisper White using the Leaflets Framelits.

SENTIMENT & ASSEMBLE

Remember that you can totally customize this part, so, this is only a guide for the actual CASE.

  1. Cut the “friends” image from the Silver Foil using the Lovely Words Thinlits. You’ll snip the word from the circle.
  2. Stamp the rest of the sentiment on a scrap of whisper white and snip out with Paper Snips. I used a sentiment from Sunshine Sayings – it was “so happy for you” and I cut it down to “for you” and added the comma with a Cajun Craze marker.
  3. Affix the white leaves to the card base. I opted to glue them down directly, though they may have been popped up on Stampin’ Dimensionals
  4. Add circles of Silver Metallic Thread to the back of the colored leaf. Affix to the card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  5. Adhere the “friend” diecut and the stamped sentiment (as shown)
  6. Add three silver sequins from the Metallics Sequin Assortment (as shown)

How Hard Was It to Crack this CASE?

Difficulty Level: 2 out of 5 – There’s lots of steps, but breaking it out like I did makes this card totally manageable! You could even do this one in multiples with an assembly-line approach. If you want to make more than one, I would recommend changing the center leaf to a single color vs. taking the time to put all the layers together. That’s the most time consuming part!

VIDEO: How to Wow – Treat Bag from a Notecard

Looking for a quick way to make some small, but sturdy treat bags for your next dinner party or event? Today’s project is your answer. You can make treat bags from Stampin’ Up! notecards and your bag punch board, lickety-split!

You probably know that I don’t share 3D or packaging projects very often, but this week’s Tic Tac Toe Challenge really had me thinking. Of course, it would be MY board that would flex my creativity! I was determined to use that “anything but a card” box…

And, I’m currently featuring the Tabs for Anything stamp set – which is waaayyy versatile! So, I wanted to show off the set, along with the Color Theory DSP in a fun, new way!

What’s more, it’s easy to whip up a batch of these, store them flat (and un-decorated) and then pull them out for whenever you need one. Stampin’ Up! Notecards are the perfect base for these beauties, and come in a pack of 20 for only $6. Leave ’em plain, stamp them, or cover them… you’ll be reaching for these bags every time you want to add some sparkle to your luncheon, dinner event, or even as a parting gift displayed all on a table.

Here’s a video on how to make them:

How about that? Here’s some more tips to make this card a success!

  • Leave the bags flat until you’re ready to use them. That makes for easier storage and keeps the folds nice and crisp.
  • Leave the top of the bag open! Fill the inside with some paper shred or tissue and let it peek out the top. Just use a decorative paperclips to attach the tag.
  • Cover it (piece should be 7″ x 3 3/4″ to make it all the way around), stamp it, or leave it plain. This bag works any way you want!

On the CASE: Tabs for Everything

It’s a new month, and Ann & I are On the CASE!

Ann is CASE-ing out an amazing creation on page 93 of the Annual Catalog, and this time, I thought I would sleuth out the sample for a new stamp set and punch bundle – Tabs for Everything. It’s on page 43 of the Annual Catalog, and there’s all sorts of cute samples to dive into! The new circle tab punch is a no-brainer accessory to make super cute pull-tab pocket cards, catalog or planner tabs, or even bookmarks. I decided to hone in on the square card done up in Pool Party. It doesn’t use the coordinating Circle Tab Punch, but it does use another coordinating punch you probably already have!

I was really hoping that it would be a 3x3 size, and after cutting out the circles to give it a whirl, I quickly figured out that it was! Yippee!! I really love the 3x3 size – it’s commonly called a love note size. The sample is also a play on an “inchie” card. Inchie cards are usually made up of 1″ x 1″ squares – sometimes with stamping (like a sampler), sometimes with just different DSP. In this case, we have stamped images like a sampler, but they’re circles, and 3/4″ instead of 1″.

Stamps and Paper and Inks … Oh, My!

Stamps: Tabs for Everything
Paper: Thick Whisper White Cardstock (3″ x 6″), Whisper White Cardstock (3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″), Pool Party (3″ x 3″)
Inks: Pool Party, Crushed Curry, Flirty Flamingo, Tranquil Tide
Other: 3/4″ Circle Punch, Metallic Enamel Shapes, Iridescent Sequin Assortment, sewing machine (optional)

A note on card size

The 3x3 size can truly be just 3x3 instead of a 3x6 folded base. Doing just a 3x3 “postcard” is a cute option if you want to turn it into a tag – just add a hole in the corner and some twine to attach. Or, if you want a quick card to put in a lunch or pocket, just write on the back and call it good!

On the CASE Notes

(your step-by-step guide)

This cutie will come together quickly – just take it color by color and you’ll be done in no time!

  1. If you’re using a 3″ x 6″ card base, score at 3″ and burnish the fold with your bone folder. Set aside.
  2. Take the 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ whisper white, and start creating your “inchies”. If you’re following the CASE, I found it easiest to start with one color and stamp all of the images that use that color, then move on to the next. Here’s some pics:

***Nit-picky details: Note that in step 3, I stamped the small heart, and the stars stamps using stamped-off Pool Party. If you look at the catalog, you’ll see them there, oh, so faintly! Also note the darker hearts are both Tranquil Tide – one stamped off. Same for the stars – they’re stamped-off Tranquil Tide.

  1. Now that you’re done stamping, punch out each circle using the 3/4″ Circle Punch. There’s only one that’s a little bit different – the 3-heart circle. Here’s some pictures to help you see how to get the shorter “dip” of Flirty Flamingo on the bottom:

Finishing

Time to assemble!

  1. Adhere the circles to the Pool Party layer. Be sure to space the images evenly. I just eyeballed this step, but you could get scientific with a ruler and pencil if you want…
  2. OPTIONAL: Add stitching with a sewing machine and white thread across three of the circles as shown.
  3. Adhere the Pool Party layer to the card base.
  4. Add the smallest Metallic Enamel Shapes, and a sequin. I find that the Precision Glue Pen is the best tool for applying sequins. Just a little glue goes a long way!

How Hard Was It to Crack this CASE?

Difficulty Level: 1 out of 5 – For such a cute card, this one came together in just a few minutes. Of course, you could step it up with some colored 1″ circles behind the stamped images, but why? This would be great for a group stamping event like a workshop or class. It teaches some core stamping techniques – stamping off, stamping over other stamped images and punching.

VIDEO: How to Wow – Spinner Cards

Ready for more Tic Tac Toe Fun? A new challenge opened this morning, featuring a board designed by Susan Itell. We’ve got lots of amazing inspiration and I’ve got a new How to Wow video to teach you how to make a spinner card!

We’re rapidly approaching the end of our 2nd month over at Tic Tac Toe Challenge, and I can’t be more thrilled with participation! Our Designers are just amazing, and everyone playing along is creating such inspired projects! I’m sure this week will be no different as we have another great challenge board. I noticed that YELLOW likes to pop up a lot – it must be a really popular color right now since it keeps coming to mind for the Designers. So, I thought I would try to avoid it to show the versatility of the Tic Tac Toe style challenges… Let’s take a look at the board:

Play along at the Tic Tac Toe Challenge - Inspiring you 8-ways each week! Find us @tttchallenge or tictactoechallenge.com. New challenges every Thursday!

I really liked the idea of using a doily – as I have them, but I don’t often use them. Do you have that problem too? What products do you buy and then have trouble using? Leave a comment to share!

Click to Comment

Anyway, I ultimately went with the middle row: Circle, Linen Thread, Birthday. I saw that combo and instantly thought of a technique that I wanted to share in a How to Wow video. So, that’s what I did – BUT, I also added in a doily, and I guess you could call the design feminine too. So, I guess I got half of the board 😉

For the Tic Tac Toe Challenge (#TTTC008). Featuring, Birthday Banners stamp set, Bunch of Banners Framelits, Bundle of Love Specialty DSP. For more details and a video on making a spinner card, click through. #pmretreat #stampinup #note #birthdaycard #birthday #handstamped

Spinner cards aren’t that hard, but they sure do get a WOW from their recipient! It does take a little bit of planning, especially if you’re using a punch to make the cut-out. Today’s video is just a tad longer, but I go through some good tips to keep in mind as you’re making your spinner creation. Let’s watch!

Did you love it? Here’s some more tips to make this card a success!

  • Dress up the cutout with a border of some type. If you’re using a layering shape, cut out the next larger size in a complimentary color (or metallic) for some extra pizzazz. OR, use a doily! Wow! What a great use for that element I have such a hard time with 😀
  • Not just for babies – The Bundle of Love Specialty DSP is for anything that needs some glitz! Gold patterned on Very Vanilla is about as sophisticated as you can get. On the opposite side, the same patterns in Very Vanilla with either Soft Sky and Blushing Bride might be screaming “baby” to you, but to me, just says “classy”. It’s a must-have for any occasion.
  • Linen Thread is a staple item! Use it to make shabby-chic/vintage swirls, and to get your spinner twirling. It’s super easy to use and add to any project.

VIDEO: How to Wow – Distressed Wood

It’s been a few days – sometimes life gets in the way! But, I have a great card for you today, featuring a nice distressed wood technique.

Today’s the last day for Tic Tac Toe Challenge #7. If you haven’t played, you have until 12 Central to link up! There are some amazing projects from the Design Team, AND in the gallery from fellow players. If you don’t have time to play, at least do stop by and see all the amazing projects!

Play along at the Tic Tac Toe Challenge - Inspiring you 8-ways each week! Find us @tttchallenge or tictactoechallenge.com. New challenges every Thursday!

In a way, I was glad that this was DT X’s challenge, as I really had a hard time putting together a project. I think I just didn’t want to do another flower card. I thought about acetate, but just didn’t have a creative idea…. so, in the end, I decided on the right diagonal – diecut, distress ink, embossing folder.

For the Tic Tac Toe Challenge (#TTTC007). Featuring, Birthday Banners stamp set, Bunch of Banners Framelits, Pinewood Planks DTIEFt. For more details and a video on distressing wood embossing, click through. #pmretreat #stampinup #note #birthdaycard #birthday #handstamped

Let’s take a closer look at the showstopper technique – the distressed wood background. In just a few easy steps, you’ll have the same results!

How about that? Here’s some more tips to make this card a success!

  • Don’t go overboard with the sentiment element – let the distressed wood shine as the focal point!
  • To soften the banner sentiment, use a Blender Pen to add some shadowing to the edges of the banner stamp.
  • Don’t be afraid to cut open your copper trim. I like to loosen an end then stick my finger all the way through to get a large opening that can be cut completely so you end up with a flat piece of copper mesh.
  • Always apply embellishments in odd numbers. Today, I used 5 pearls!
