VIDEO: How to Create Realistic Paper Succulents

2017 Pals Blog Hop badge

Welcome to the Families First Pals Blog Hop for April 2017.  We are thankful you stopped by to take in all of our projects! Today, I’ll share how to create realistic paper succulents.

This month we are featuring projects that are all about our families. This is a great time of year to think about what to make for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or upcoming graduations. And, family vacations are just around the corner… how would you want to remember those special family moments? We hope to provide you with lots of ideas and that you enjoy our creations.

You may just be starting the Blog Hop or may have come from the previous link from the Line-up on the Pals Blog Hop listing shown below.  The full lineup will help you move along from blog to blog so you may see all the projects.

Going WOW…

I have to admit, I didn’t think I would get the Vertical Garden kit, but I needed a cute project for an event raffle prize, and thought that I could take this one to the next level with a little creativity…

Can you believe this is the same kit that’s in the Occasions Catalog? Honestly, there wasn’t too much effort involved in stepping this project up to a “WOW”. Here’s some key products:

  • Sponge Daubers – to swirl on various colors to the diecuts
  • Versamark Reinker – applied to the succulents to give a rich, waxy look. Also painted on to the roses to apply (retired) Real Red Glitter Embossing Powder.
  • Stampin’ Dimensionals – on each succulent layer to add depth, space, and allow for the layers to curl properly.
  • Bone Folder – to curl the succulent petals the correct way (see the video).
  • Calypso Coral Stampin’ Write Marker – to color the edges of the roses so the white core of the paper doesn’t show.
  • Hot Glue Gun – necessary for the roses, and best to adhere everything to the tray.
  • Reindeer Moss (from the dollar store) – to add more bulk and realism between the flowers.

Check out my video that walks you through the whole stepped-up succulent process…

Retiring Colors to Welcome Someone New

The Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop. Join us each month for inspiration and amazing projects using Stampin' Up! products. #pmretreat #stampinup #bloghop #rubberstamping #papercrafting
Welcome to the Blog Hop for April 2017. This month our theme is  the Retiring 2015-17 In Colors. Can you spot all the retiring products in my design today?

Tomorrow marks the release of the “retiring list” – when we find out what will not carry over into the new Stampin’ Up! year. Of course we know that the 2015-17 In Colors will be on the short list. These products typically sell out fast, so now’s the time to stock up on all your favorites!

You may just be starting the Blog Hop or may have come from the previous link from the Line-up on the Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop listing shown below. The full lineup will help you move along from blog to blog so you may see all the projects.

Something Old for Someone New

I don’t often need baby cards, but it’s always good to have a few (at least one boy and one girl) hanging around just in case. Of course, the Suite Sayings stamp set has so many different sentiments, this card could easily be for any number of other occasions with the quick change of sentiment.

There’s lots of fun layers, embellishments, and a new-found favorite from an old product – Dazzling Details. I cannot get enough!

I picked up the Cupcakes & Carousels Embellishment Kit a few weeks ago, thinking that the gold foil labels would be an easy way to add a focal point and sentiment to a design. Well – I was right! I’m 99% sure that this embellishment kit will not carry over into the new catalog, as most of these kinds of products don’t usually carry over. So, another one for the short list, huh? Not only are the labels spectacular, but the Calypso Coral Ombre ribbon is just amazing! I hope that’s a preview of something new to come…

Let’s Create, Simply!

If you want to create cards like the ones I share, there is a simple way to do it. All you have to remember is “Let’s Create, Simply!”. Remembering that phrase will help you recall three key points of design: Layout, Color, Style. Don’t overthink it and use these three steps to make great cards every time. Click on the tabs below for today’s tips and Pin-worthy graphics! (Hint: If you’re on a mobile device, you can save images by pressing and holding on the picture and selecting “Share Image”. You should get a whole bunch of options depending on what apps you have installed on your device.) Click on the “+” signs to open the different sections.

Layout

Get more card layouts like this one over at my blog! pixelmavensretreat.com Stampin' Up! #pmretreat #crafttips #cards #sketchStart your project by finding a great layout. Here’s a sketch of today’s design. See how simple it is when you break it down into its parts? Save this sketch to a Pinterest board and use it any time you need design inspiration.

Featured Element: Strips

Center strips take this design from bland to fab. Of course, adding in the see-through acetate element really did help that background shine. Don’t be afraid to go with more layers – you can always pull one out (before adhering them all) if you think it’s too much!

Color

Get more color combos like this one over at my blog! pixelmavensretreat.com #pmretreat #crafttips #cards #colorcombos #stampinupColor doesn’t have to be cosmic! Inspiration is all around, and you can hardly go wrong with any of Stampin’ Up!’s colors. Here’s the primary colors used on today’s creation. You can save this to a Pinterest board to use any time you’re looking for project inspiration.

Featured Coordination: In Colors

Of course, the In Color collections are designed to work with each other. They usually feature a combination of the color groups – Brights, Subtles, Regals & Neutrals. You can’t go wrong picking a few to work together in a single design. I would characterize the 2015-17 In Colors as follows:

  • Cucumber Crush – Bright
  • Delightful Dijon – Regal
  • Mint Macaron – Subtle
  • Tip Top Taupe – Neutral
  • Watermelon Wonder – Bright
Style

Featured Style: Gold

Touches of gold, or any metallic, will take your design up a notch. But, it’s important to not go too crazy! I think today’s card would have looked great with just a plain Very Vanilla panel in the background, but I chose to take my new favorite embellishment/tool – the Dazzling Details along with a paintbrush to create a gold glittered designer paper. I feel like I’ve rediscovered Dazzling Details all over again!

5 Ways to Add a Lace Look

The Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop. Join us each month for inspiration and amazing projects using Stampin' Up! products. #pmretreat #stampinup #bloghop #rubberstamping #papercrafting

Welcome to the first ever Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop! This month’s theme is Sale-a-Bration, so I thought I’d showcase 5 ways to add a lace look using the Delicate Details stamp set. It’s a lovely “accessory” stamp set that’s available FREE with $50 purchase during Sale-a-Bration!

Since this is an “accessory” stamp set (doesn’t have any sentiments) I paired it with another Sale-a-Bration set – Any Occasion. You’ll see that my samples really are great for any occasion — Lace isn’t reserved for the frilly and feminine!

You may just be starting the blog hop here at my blog or may be hopping over from elsewhere on the list. If you get off track at any time, the full lineup below will help you move along from blog to blog so you see all the projects.

Lace isn't just for the frilly & feminine. Today's 5 designs take you outside the box!Click To Tweet

Stretching My Creativity

Ok – here we go! 5 ways to add a lacy look. I came up with the title before I created the projects, so I was committed (or doomed to an eternity in the Retreat to come up with 5 samples). After I got past the first one, the rest came easy. I think the key tipping point was deciding to add in the Any Occasion stamp set for the sentiments. It helped set the tone and card size (I opted for our 3.5 x. 5 notecards).

There’s lots of watercoloring too… it really is quite fun to come up with washes and other ways to use our reinkers and aquapainters! Ok, so, enough blahblahblahblah…. Click on the plus signs to view each project.

1. Distressed & Hinted-at Lace
For the Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop, March 2017. Featuring Delicate Details & Any Occasion stamp sets, Aquapainters, Gold Sequins Trim, Gold Wink of Stella #pmretreat #stampinup #foryou #greetingcard #handstamped

This is the design that kicked-off this whole collection. I wanted watercolor – bright & vivid. I wanted lace – hinted-at… UGH! It took me a couple of tries, but I finally arrived at gorgeous! Yes – that is Tempting Turquoise. Straight from the re-inker with just a hint of water added. Layer, dry. Layer, dry. Layer, dry. Then, the lace was stamped with Whisper White craft ink, and immediately covered in white embossing powder. I took a dry paintbrush to the powder to remove some of it from the lace, then heat-set it. I did stamp the “twine” stamp to align the sentiment, but then I glued some Linen Thread right over the top, with one of the Party Animal embellishments. I did add some Clear Wink of Stella to the lace in the end…

2. Lace In-The-Round
For the Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop, March 2017. Featuring Delicate Details & Any Occasion stamp sets, Aquapainters, Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits, Gold Wink of Stella #pmretreat #stampinup #thankyou#greetingcard #handstamped

This one came together quick! Another watercolor wash using Tempting Turquoise reinker – this time, on Shimmery White Cardstock. Then, some ink spatter, and Gold Wink of Stella spatter. Dry it up quick with the Heat Tool. Then, I punched out a 2″ circle from some scrap and attached it to an acrylic block. I was able to work one of the lace patterns around the circle, and add the sentiment around the bottom (check out my Instagram feed). Genius! Stamp in Basic Black Archival Ink, add the Dragonfly and pop-up on some Stampin’ Dimensionals.

3. Lace in the Background
For the Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop, March 2017. Featuring Delicate Details & Any Occasion stamp sets, Aquapainters, Gold Sequins Trim, Gold Wink of Stella #pmretreat #stampinup #wedding #weddingshower #greetingcard #handstamped

Click on Image for Product Recipe

I know you’ve seen it everywhere, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t use all of the Delicate Details stamps in a big block to create a background. Here, Whisper White Craft Ink on a Crumb Cake Notecard is a nice, light detail to set the background apart from the top layer. There’s some more Turquoise watercolor wash with gold and turquoise spatter. This time, a tiny bit of Calypso Coral – in both the hearts and the background strip. Oh, and how about some glitz with a small sequins flag? Wondering how I got that scallop? I used just the top of the Best Badge Punch! Nice hack, right?

4. Lace Gone Masculine…?
For the Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop, March 2017. Featuring Delicate Details & Any Occasion stamp sets, Aquapainters,Urban Underground Embellishments, Gold Wink of Stella #pmretreat #stampinup #birthday #masculine #greetingcard #handstamped

I knew I wanted to get in a good guy look, so here we are. Crumb Cake notecard with watercoloring across the bottom. I opted for the more curly-cue stamps from Delicate Details. Does it count as lace? There’s some more Turquoise and gold splatter, and the Happy Birthday banner. To set off the top layer, I added a strip of Tangerine Tango to the top, and a screw head element from the Urban Underground embellishments.

5. Lace As An Architectural Feature
For the Remarkable Ink Big Blog Hop, March 2017. Featuring Delicate Details & Any Occasion stamp sets, Aquapainters, Gold Sequins Trim, Gold Wink of Stella #pmretreat #stampinup #hello #greetingcard #handstamped

This last look is pretty far out. I got some watercolor paper really wet on top and dripped the ink and let it roll. That’s what I got. Pretty neat!. Then, I added the two lace patterns – one on the base card, and one on the watercolor element. I thought I would use ribbon, but opted for the Gold Sequins Trim instead. I think the whole top has an architectural look to it. Kind of  like crown molding or the top of a column, or wood “gingerbread” detail (technically called a Spandrel). I used the Signo White Gel Pen to add some white detail, just for some pop.

How to Break a Creative Block

2017 Pals Blog Hop. Join us as we share our themed creations every month.

Welcome to the Pals Blog Hop for February 2017. We are thankful you stopped by to take a look at our 2017 Blog Hop monthly themes.

This month we are CASE’ing a project shown in a current Stampin’ Up! catalog. After all, with the Annual, Occasions and Sale-a-Bration catalogs available right now, there is much inspiration from which to choose. We hope you enjoy our creations.

You may just be starting the Blog Hop or may have come from the previous link from the Line-up on the Pals Blog Hop listing shown below.  The full lineup will help you move along from blog to blog so you may see all the projects.

Break a Creative Block

Spent too much time surfing Pinterest? Yah, me too. I find that the more I look, the less inspired I am to make my own original creations. But, you gotta start somewhere! So, break that creative block by CASE-ing a project – either in part or wholly. What’s CASE-ing? CASE means Copy And Share Everything. Creative types often work best by seeking out inspiration. That’s why Pinterest is so popular! So, whether you create the card exactly as you saw it, or you are inspired by it somehow, don’t be afraid to share your work! Just remember to share where you got the inspiration from in the first place.

Today’s CASE

Today, I chose to go for the full-on COPY for my CASE of a Stampin’ Up! project. You can find my card on page 49 of the Annual Catalog. All I did was swap out the colors for cardstock that I have a LOT of. (Mostly because I accidentally ordered multiples of the Affectionately Yours Cardstock Pack… whoops!)

This really is a super lovely, and super easy card to put together, and the stamp set – Flourishing Phrases – is a versatile set that should have a home in every stamper’s collection.

I opted for a Sympathy card as I had a request from a friend to make some up for her. But, I could have easily gone for the Thank You (pictured in the catalog), congratulations, hello or “just a note”.

You should get a whole bunch of options depending on what apps you have installed on your device.)

Get more card layouts like this one over at my blog! pixelmavensretreat.com Stampin' Up! | pmretreat - crafttips | cards | sketchStart your project by finding a great layout. Here’s a sketch of today’s design. See how simple it is when you break it down into its parts? Save this sketch to a Pinterest board and use it any time you need design inspiration.

Featured Element: Whitespace!

When you break it down, this card is S-I-M-P-L-E, SIMPLE! That means that we have a LOT of whitespace. What to do? You have three choices, really. Fill it with a pattern – DSP. Fill it with a texture – an embossing folder. Or, fill it with some stamping. That’s what this CASE did – using the large flourish stamp, it gets stamped at an angle at the top and bottom, and then there’s some coloring with a Blender Pen.

Get more color combos like this one over at my blog! pixelmavensretreat.com pmretreat | crafttips | cards | color combos | Stampin' Up!Color doesn’t have to be cosmic! Inspiration is all around, and you can hardly go wrong with any of Stampin’ Up!’s colors. Here’s the primary colors used on today’s creation. You can save this to a Pinterest board to use any time you’re looking for project inspiration.

Featured Coordination: Paper Packs

Stampin’ Up! always comes up with great color combos! Not only do they list those colors with the DSP packs ( and on the DSP packs), they also have coordinating Cardstock Assortments. That makes it even easier to get the right colors from the start. Today I used the assortment pack that coordinates with the Affectionately Yours DSP. Though, I didn’t use any of that DSP, I already knew that those colors would work perfectly together! Thanks SU!

Styling is where it’s easy to go overboard. So, take a deep breath and focus on one key technique to add some flair to your project.

Featured Style: Subtle Elegance

For some reason, sympathy cards seem like they shouldn’t be overdone. Not a lot of sparkle, or bling. Many times they’re monochromatic, and very understated. But, if done right, a little bit of shimmer adds just the right touch. I hope you can see it in today’s example. The Clear Wink of Stella is THE perfect way to add subtle shimmer to any project. Today, they’re on some of the leaves and buds. Then, just to finish off the flower embellishments, I put a medium-sized Metallic Enamel Shape in each center.

Forgotten Treasures for the Pals Sparkle and Shine Hop

2016 Pals Blog Hop badge
Welcome to the Pals Blog Hop for December 2016. This month our projects showcase products that can add sparkle and shine for a finishing touch. We hope to provide you with lots of ideas and that you enjoy our creations.
You may just be starting the Blog Hop or may have come from the previous link from the Line-up on the Pals Blog Hop listing shown below.  The full lineup will help you move along from blog to blog so you may see all the projects.

Forgotten Treasures that Shine

Do you remember back to August when the Stampin’ Up! Holiday Catalog was all shiny and new? It seems like years have passed since then, and now that we’re into the throes of super cold weather, fall is a distant memory – and so are all those great stamps and dies that we fell in love with… way back when.

Well! It’s time to dust them off because one of our early favorites – the Paisleys and Posies stamp set and coordinating dies will be carrying over into January, and may even make it into next year’s annual catalog!

Paisleys and Posies is a super versatile bundle. Use the sentiments from the set, or pair the images with a sentiment from another stamp set, like I did today with Suite Sayings.

But today’s hop is all about sparkle and shine, so, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that the Petals & Paisleys Specialty DSP (that comes with those amazing designs with shiny copper foil) is only available until January 3rd – or while supplies last! The Copper Foil Sheets are carrying over into the new year (Yippee!!!).

See how simple it is when you break it down into its parts? Save this sketch to a Pinterest board and use it any time you need design inspiration.

Featured Element: Medallion

The highlight of this sketch is the oval element – or medallion. Of course, it could be any number of things – a collage, like my design today; or perhaps just a big sentiment cut out in an oval. Perhaps you would rotate the sketch 90-degrees (so section B is on the bottom), and then the oval looks more like a window or a space for a portrait.

You can save this to a Pinterest board to use any time you’re looking for project inspiration.

Featured Coordination: Monochromatic

Using shades of the same hue is called monochromatic. The key to monochrome design is to use the colors intentionally. There is a ton of Night of Navy in the DSP strip, so I used Night of Navy ink to stamp on the Island Indigo and Pool Party cardstock pieces. To bring all three shades together, it was important to use multiple pieces of Island Indigo and Pool Party.

Monochrome combos almost always need a neutral to help them pop. In this case, I used both copper and Very Vanilla.

Styling is where it’s easy to go overboard. So, take a deep breath and focus on one key technique to add some flair to your project.

Featured Style: Collage

I stamped and diecut various pieces from the Paisleys & Posies stamp set to collage with the sentiment that was stamped and cut out with a simple 2″ circle punch. I needed something to hold it all together, so I diecut a scalloped oval from the Fabulous Foil Designer Acetate. It was just enough to bring it all together. The sentiment is popped up on Stampin’ Dimensionals to give depth to the design and the collage element.

As you can see, there’s no other embellishments or ribbon on this beauty – it doesn’t need it with the collage and all of stamped and paper patterns.
